Equity and support
3 termsInclusive classroomAn inclusive classroom is designed so students with different learning, social, emotional, and accessibility needs can participate meaningfully.Social-emotional learningSocial-emotional learning, often shortened to SEL, describes how students build skills for self-awareness, relationships, decision-making, and emotional regulation.Support needsSupport needs are the academic, social, emotional, behavioral, or accessibility needs that affect how a student should be placed.
Grouping strategies
5 termsAbility groupingAbility grouping organizes students by current skill level, either within a classroom or across classrooms.Cluster groupingCluster grouping places a small group of students with similar needs or strengths together inside a larger mixed classroom.Heterogeneous groupingHeterogeneous grouping places students with varied abilities, needs, and backgrounds in the same classroom or learning group.LoopingLooping is a school model where a teacher stays with the same group of students for more than one year.Multi-age classroomA multi-age classroom includes students from more than one grade or age cohort in the same classroom.
Operational constraints
5 termsClassroom capacityClassroom capacity is the maximum number of students a classroom can reasonably or legally hold.Gender balanceGender balance in class placement means checking that gender distribution is not unusually uneven across classrooms.Placement constraintsPlacement constraints are rules or preferences that shape which class assignments are allowed or preferred.Required placementA required placement locks a student into a specific classroom before the rest of the class list is generated.Teacher workload balanceTeacher workload balance means distributing student needs so no teacher receives an unfair or unsustainable share of the work.
