Copy a class list setup for a new planning scenario

Class list setups are full of careful decisions you do not want to type twice. You may be splitting one grade into a second planning scenario, testing a different room setup, or starting next term from a setup that already has relevant students and rules. Copying gives you a separate workspace for that review.

Copy a class list setup into a separate workspace

You can build a new class list setup from one you already have. When you create a workspace, pick Copy existing, choose the source class list, and Shibutz duplicates the whole setup into a fresh workspace you can edit freely.

• Students: every child and their attributes, scales, and notes.
• Classrooms: names, teacher labels, and capacities.
• Preferences and restrictions: the friend pairs you want kept together and the ones you need held apart.
• Required placements and settings: the students locked into a specific classroom, plus your balance thresholds.

One thing it leaves behind on purpose: generated results. An assignment describes one finished placement snapshot, so copying it into a new planning scenario would only get in your way. The new workspace arrives clean and ready for a fresh run once your edits are in.

Why it matters

Copying a workspace gives you a safe starting point without tying the feature to a calendar. A principal might duplicate a grade list to test a different number of rooms, keep one version as a backup, or reuse a carefully reviewed setup for the next placement cycle. You tweak what changed instead of rebuilding the parts that still make sense.

The copy is fully your own. It lives under your account, separate from the original, so edits in one workspace never touch the source. Every student, classroom, and rule is renumbered cleanly behind the scenes, so the new workspace is internally consistent from the first click.

Getting started

Open your dashboard, create a workspace, and choose Copy existing. Give the copy a name, pick your source, and review the copied setup. For the details, see Managing Classes.

Before using a copy for a new year, verify the roster, current teacher assignments, capacities, and every carried-over rule. Old notes and separations are not automatically current. If you refresh the roster, review re-import choices rather than assuming a second upload replaces the whole cohort.
